Home Insurance Terms defined:

Dwelling - This coverage applies to the house itself, as well as any structures attached to the house such as a garage.

Personal Property/Contents - Furniture, clothing, stereo equipment, groceries, televisions, sports equipment, etc. .are all examples of personal property.

Outbuildings - These are structures that are separate from the dwelling. Examples include detached garage, shed, pool, gazebo, etc…

Additional Living Expenses/Loss of use - This coverage is in place to pay for additional expenses incurred while your claim was being settled. Example: hotel expenses, extra commuting costs due to increased distances, etc…

Personal Liability - Covers your obligation for injuries to others, along with damage to their property. Cost of defense is also included.

Medical Payments - Following an accident at your home, this coverage pays for the medical expenses of others, regardless of who is at fault. It does not cover your medical expenses or those of relatives who live with you.

Deductibles - A deductible is the self-insured part of each loss

Guaranteed replacement cost - The cost of replacing the property with like kind and quality...without depreciation. A deductible may apply.

Actual cash value - Actual cash value is the cost of replacing the property with like kind and quality...less depreciation. A deductible may also apply.

Vacancy - Vacancy is when the normal tenants have left and have no intention of returning. Insurance coverage on dwelling and contents ceases automatically when the premises have been vacant for more than 30 consecutive days without the insurer's prior approval. Coverage for certain perils such as vandalism lapse immediately.
